Ether, any of a class of organic compounds characterized by an oxygen atom bonded to two alkyl or aryl groups two. Ethers are similar in structure to two alcohols, and ethers and alcohols are both similar in structure, two water. In an alcohol one hydrogen atom of a water molecule is replaced by an alkyl group, whereas in an ether both hydrogen are replaced by alkyl or aryl Ali groups. So what exactly is ether? Ether is an extremely flammable chemical and one of the first anesthetics. Technically, it's the any compound where an oxygen atom is bound to two two carbon, called alkyl groups, on either side, as shown here. We can use the letter ' R ' represent the two alkyl groups in a chart of the molecule.
