Der er ingen jul uden juletræ i Danmark i vores moderne samfund, men faktisk har juletræet en ret kort historie i vores danske jul i forhold til nogle af de andre traditioner.
Det første beskrevne juletræ i Danmark er fra 1811 hvor dr. Martin Lehmann som var fra Holsten og kone tændte det første juletræ på Ny Kongensgade nr. 221.
Juletræet indtog i Tyskland blev for alvor kendt allerede i 14-1500 tallet, hvor de tyske håndværkerlag holdt juletræsfest, hvor træet med smågaver og pynt stod til hellig tre konger.
1800 tallet var dog først her at juletræet fik sit indtog i Danmark for alvor, og blev først udbredt i de Københavnske borgerhjem og derefter ved lærere og præster. Men den almindelig udbredelse til alle klasser, kom dog først i 1900 tallet omkring 1 verdenskrig, men pengene var dog små, så det var ikke et pyntet træ ligesom vi har i dag.
