Det kan være svært og hårdt at flytte til et nyt land. Hvis man ikke kan sproget, ingen familie eller venner og når kulturen er anderledes i forhold til hvad man er vant til. Det kan være svært at tilpasse sig, når man er vant til andre normer og regler. Når man er forældre vil man gerne give sine børn et godt liv, med normer fra ens hjem land og deres nye hjem.
"Hvor guderne flyver" er skrevet af Jean Kwok, en kinesisk amerikansk forfatter, hun blev født i Hong Kong, men flyttede til Brooklyn i en meget ung alder. Novellen handler om en kinesisk familie, hvor moren kæmper med at give din datter det bedste liv hun kan få. Forældrene arbejder utrættelig på en fabrik i Chinatown. De har en datter, som hedder Perle, som går i skole. Det er en balletskole, hvor hun er så dygtig, at de tilbyder hende et stipendium.
