I denne historie bliver vi introduceret for the protagonist Dawn, som har to søstre, den yngste der hedder Janie og den ældste der hedder Marla. Dawn og Janie skal på fiske tur med deres far til en frozen lake. De skærer hul i søen for at kunne fiske. Moren vil ikke med for hun siger det er uden for sæsonen. The ice breaks imens faren og pigerne kører rundt på isen. Faren prøver at redder begge piger, men han og Janie klare den ikke i tide og drukner.
