Det er åbenlyst for de fleste læsere, at Jig er gravid, og at amerikaneren forsøger at overtale hende til at få en abort. Men lykkes det ham at overtale hende? Er de gift? Hvad laver de i Spanien? Er Jig også amerikaner? Er novellen, som Hemingways Nick Adam historier, delvist selvbiografisk?
