Ud over dette er de bag en række kidnapninger af vestlige nødhjælpsarbejder, journalister og andre grupperinger af anden etnisk og religiøse baggrunde. I november 2015 påtog islamisk stat sig ansvaret for blandt andet terrorangrebet i Paris.
