Hver gruppe af immigranter havde deres grunde til at udvandre fra deres fødeland og deres grunde til at det lige netop skulle immigrere til Amerika. Nogle valgt ikke selv at komme, men blev hentet som slaver, hvorimod andre kom på grund af kriser i deres fødeland. De fleste kom dog af den samme grund, nemlig ”den amerikaske drøm”.
