I novellen får Sir Mohan’s arrogance og snobberi konsekvenser, da de to soldater kommer ind i toget, kalder ham skældsordet ”neger” og smider ham ud.
Man kan sige at det var konsekvenserne af Sir Mohan’s handlinger, altså hans karma, der skulle til før at det ville gå op for ham, at hans snobberi og hans handlinger for at fremstå som en fin englænder måske var blevet for altoverskyggende og fyldte hele hans liv, alt imens han glemte alle de vigtige værdier i livet – ikke mindst hans hustru.
