It consists of two parts with the first part being the one on the actual trip to the lake and the second part being the one with the flashbacks to earlier at their home where we gain some background information about the family. This shifting in time makes the start of the story a bit confusing and the reader’s focus in the beginning becomes the parents’ dysfunctional marriage and the way the children interact instead of what is happening on the lake trip. In the second part about the lake the father hits Dawn and we start to speculate if the father is abusive and if that is the reason the parents have issues. In the middle of the story when the father tries to yank off Dawns seatbelt, that is the first time we start to understand what is really happening and the moment we finally realize the actual danger of the situation is when Blodgett writes, “All of a sudden the sound is turned back on. Dad shouts and swears. He looks angry. The wheels and now the hood are under water.”1 The last part of the short story takes place before the funeral where Janie and Sam are going to get buried and we finally understand what has happened entirely.
