Hovedpersonen Dawn er en førstepersons fortællere og hendes synspunk påvirker historie på den måde, at vi som læsere skal gætte hvad er foregår under overfladen af forældrenes ægteskab og det er faktisk kun I sidste ende vi får afvide at det meste er sket. Selve teksten omhandler nogle interessante temaer, men vi to vigtigste er kærlighed og ting under overfladen. Selvom kærligheden ikke er det mest synlige tema, så har den en stor betydning I forhold til den måde figurerne bruges I historien. Det er primært den kærlighed forældrene giver deres børn. Forældrene elsker deres børn og det er en af grundene til de skjuler deres problemer, fordi de skal bevarer deres børn. Forældrene viser kærlighed på hver deres måde. Faren viser den sande kærlighed, der hvor gemmer døtrene og ofre sit eget liv og moren viser sand kærlighed, på Janies værelse hvor hun viser sine følelser til sine børn.
